The brass of the sextant pushes against your eye. These stars are unfamiliar. You pivot your calipers across the parchment, walking and measuring this alien land. What lies beyond those distant bluffs? Who occupies that structure in the valley? You are an interloper here; so tread with respect, observe, and most importantly, finish your map.

Cartograph is a solo / multiplayer map-making RPG about journaling, exploration, worldbuilding, and resource management. The core rules are easy to learn, and facilitate the creation of a world map through a variety of prompts and tables. By the end of a game, you will have produced a map of an unknown world, complete with a journal that details those places. This is a great artefact to use as a homebrew setting for your DnD 5e campaign, or other fantasy systems.

  • A pencil and eraser.
  • Paper to draw your map.
  • A place to journal.
  • A deck of standard playing cards.
  • A collection of six-sided dice.

Cartograph is played over a series of turns. Each turn, you will roll your pool of dice onto your map page. Then, you will fill in the details your cartographer can survey about the area based on these rolls. You'll pick your next destination, travel there, and draw a playing card to generate a prompt which will give you a a few questions to answer in your journal and some context for the location. Then, you'll manage your resources, before starting the cycle again!

Cartograph is designed to be super flexible, and super modular. If you don't like journalling games, no problem! The Atlas Edition includes a ruleset to play Cartograph more akin to traditional roleplaying. You want a more chill and relaxed experience? Easy! Follow the peaceful mode rules for casual play.

Hello, would you please add some community copies if possible?

Fantastic game! Hope you guys can soon figure out shipping to the EU again. Can't wait to get my hands on the real book! :D

Thank you so much! We’re hoping to have EU shipping sorted out in the next month, so not long now!

That's great news! I'll keep an eye out :)

Hey! We just got EU shipping sorted out on our website so it should be available and the shipping should hopefully be reasonable. Happy map making!

Fantastic news, thanks for letting me know! Just ordered the complete Cartograph-Set and shipping is absolutely reasonable! :D

Cartograph is a brilliant map-drawing RPG and worldbuilding engine. Each turn shapes the land, while you physically sketch the evolving region in front of you. It’s tactile, creative, and incredibly satisfying to watch a blank page slowly transform into a living map

It pairs beautifully with other systems, and feels almost meditative while still telling a story. If you enjoy drawing maps, procedural generation, or building worlds from the ground up, Cartograph is an easy recommendation.

Thank you for the kind words and excellent video!

Thank you for providing community copies. I will use this to assist with my world building. Dealing with serious family issues and this will 100% help me to cope with it. When things are better financially, I will come back to buy a copy.

Are there anymore community copies available? I would love play it.

Hi Doccalaban, yes there are already some available!

Thank you.

(1 edit) (+1)

This game looks awesome. Are you planning to have any community copies available anytime soon? I want to buy the printed copy, but cannot afford it right now :(

(+1)

Added some more! Happy map-making!

Thank you so much! I appreciate it.

Hello! I'm not sure if this was intentional and I'm just not understanding it, or if this is a mistake. In the Rest rules, it says to roll a d6 and half the result to determine the price of wares. In the Rules Reference, it says to use a d3. It's entirely possible I'm just misunderstanding something, but in case it is a mistake I wanted to let you know!

Hi there! Not a mistake - it’s a common tabletop term is to say ‘roll a d3’ which means to “roll a six sided die, and half the result rounded up.” saying roll a d3 just takes up considerably less space which is very beneficial for a rules reference sheet.

(+2)

Thank you for this. I plan on using my new copy to keep myself occupied during chemo. I'll try and pay it forward somehow but really do appreciate you making community copies available. It really does help.

I hope you enjoy the game, and good luck with your treatment

hi, I don't suppose there are any more community copies?

No problem!

(1 edit)

 thank you so much!

Thank you!! I've been wanting this game for a while but I couldn't afford it! I'm so excited to play :D

Is the journal available in print anywhere?

It is not - the journal was a Kickstarter exclusive, my apologies!

That is unfortunate. Perhaps a second edition could be made available at some point, potentially via a platform like Lulu Publishing.

I just found out about this on Instagram, and I wanted to ask whether there is a typical schedule for when community copies are made available or is it just when people ask for them?

(+1)

No schedule, I just make some more available when folks ask, I’ve added some more now! Hope you enjoy the game!

Is there any way to get some more community copies added? I fully intend to buy a copy as soon as I can but at the moment I'm unable to do so

(+1)

sure!

(+1)

I just picked up a copy from my FnsLGS. Stoked to play this!

(+2)

Hey there, I have been inspired by Friends at the Table and wanted to run this for some friends who love world building and then doing a Fabula Ultima campaign. Is there any chance to get a community copy

Hi! Absolutely! I’ll add some more now

(+1)

Would there be some way to have a separate pdf with just the tables? Love the book it is amazing I am going to run it this weekend with my friends.

Hey there! I don’t really have capacity to do this right now, but you can always use the “print - Save as PDF” function, and just export the pages of tables you wish to have seperated!

(+1)

Can this game be played online?

Hi Maia! There is an in-development app to play with friends online, you can gain access in our discord: https://discord.gg/VEtVq4H6Wp

Fair warning, the app is in development and can be a bit buggy, but it works!

(+1)

This game looks like something I'd love, but I keep missing available community copies. Any chance of getting one?

No problem! I’ve added some more :)

(+2)

Thank you you for the wonderful game, Friends at the Table for promo-ing it for their newest season, and to the community for buying a copy I can claim while my chips are a little down financially. I’ll be back to buy one here soon! 💜

Enjoying the game, but I'd need a clarification for Red Item Table, King card. It says "Fortune device. Gain 4 landmark dice. Costs 4 more coin." I'm confused by the last part - what costs 4 more coins? Everything from this point onwards? This item?

Another, unrelated question: does the game end immediately if you run out of dice, even if you could get more in the rest phase? As in, I have a landmark die and a biome die. I draw a card and travel to a location. The location table has me lose a biome die so I only have the landmark die left. I enter the rest phase, where I lose 1 remaining die. But I have rest actions that I could use to get more dice - is this considered losing, or is it only a loss if I don't have any dice left to lose when I enter the rest phase?

Hey! Glad to hear you are enjoying it. The fortune device itself costs 4 more coin to buy.

Yes, the game ends immediately if you run out of dice, however the game is designed to be modular, so if you don’t like that rule, simply play as you described, checking for the dice game end rule after the rest phase.

Happy map-making!

I got the item when going to a discovery site, by drawing "random item", so not a settlement of any kind, and to my understanding, you don't roll for price tables unless you're in a settlement? Would that mean that it should have cost 4 coins?

I didn't have any coins when I made my way there so I couldn't have collected it anyway, but if it had happened earlier, would the item still be there to collect later if I made my way back?

That’s correct, you only roll for prices of items when taking the shop action at a settlement. In your instance, you can take the item without paying any coin!

Is there a way to link our itch.io accounts to purchases made on your website?

No not at this stage - apologies. I’m not even sure how I would set that up 😅 sorry!

bonjour ne travaillant pas je recherche une copie communautaire svp comment je peut en obtenir une ? Merci

I’ll add some more community copies now @GRELARDON

thanks!!!

No worries. Just figured I'd ask.

Hello! Really looking forward to digging into this. However I want to flag that something about the PDF is really disagreeing with my printer. The print files appear to be over 100MB, even when I'm just trying to print off a couple pages. The middle spreads of the book, e.g. page 44 or thereabouts, just flat out refuses to print and the printer just spits out blank pages afterward. I haven't been able to find a workaround yet. Just mentioning because I thought I saw another commenter describing a similar issue.

Thank you! Hrmm, I’m really not sure about the printer issue. I am able to print the pdf out without trouble on my printer, middle spreads seemed fine, and I couldn’t see anyone else in the comments having issues. Technology is not my forte. Sorry I couldn’t be more help!

(+2)

Hello all! I've purchased and printed out the previous version of the book, but I got a notification, that an update was released. Can we get a change log? I would rather make corrections in my current copy, instead of reprinting it again..

(+2)

Hey there! I didn’t realise it notified folks when I update the files! I’ve written a changelog here: https://the-ravensridge-press.itch.io/cartograph-atlas-edition/devlog/974060/changelog-june-2025

(+1)

Thank you!

Hello there,

I just red Cartographer, Atlas Edition rules and I can't wait to start playing !
I've got a question though : In the Exemple Play p 35, during Jessie's first turn, she trows 2 landmark dice and 3 biome dice but p 33, you precise that her historian cartographer get to have 2 landmark dice and 2 biome dice (and not 3 as show in the illustration 2 pages later). Did I miss something ?
Thank you for your answer and for sharing with us such a wonderfull game :)

Hi Nimiolek! Good catch! That is indeed an error, there should be 2 biome dice to begin the example play! I’ve updated the files to reflect this change. Thanks for your kind words and keen eye!

I did something similar with my Creative Writing kids at school as well - except we just kind of freestyled and got them to just brainstorm off a blank page... and ended up with a Jurassic-era jungle world where dinos and humanoids coexist...in a human-supremacist society!!

Got some awesome stories out of it, but they struggled a bit with the mapmaking bit. So much respect for you gamemakers who churn out these full sets of rules and gamesheets! Took me an hour just to flesh out the parameters of worldmaking and powerpoint slides for my kids!

If you ever put in any more community copies, I'd love to give this a shot with my students!

Hi Animiuna, I’ve added some more community copies. I’ve heard it’s a great game to play in the classroom, so hopefully yo uget the chance!

(+2)

I want you to know that I heard about your game from an Instagram ad. I don't want to give Meta any of your money, so I searched it separately. I haven't played yet, but I've been looking for something exactly like this.

I'm very excited.

Hey JdreedGM! Thanks for saving us from paying meta, appreciate it. Thanks for the kind words! I hope you have fun, and happy map-making! If you’re inclined we have a discord where folks discuss the game and share maps, you’re welcome to join here: https://discord.gg/VEtVq4H6Wp

Hi, I adore the game and had a great time with it, is there a place the community gathers? If not, let go here and ask some questions I have about it
#1 temporary dice seem to be the best option to use for hunting or Rest Phase. There are quite a few cards that grant them. Is that intended?
#2 In Arrival Phase, you draw one card and use for both journey and location table. Is there a some patter to the pairings, because to me, it seemed more intuitive to draw a new card for each
#3 Sometimes prompts ask you to lose a resource you don't have, including step one in Arrival Phase. I assume then nothing happens, but it feels a bit wrong to leverage such rules. I am considering imposing a penalty like wound or losing dice, Any thoughts?

Hi GreenFlame! There is a pretty passionate group of Cartographers on the Ravensridge discord, you can join with this link: https://discord.gg/VEtVq4H6Wp.

  1. Yes, temporary dice are great to lose for hunting because you were going to lose them anyway :)

  2. There is no reason you couldn’t draw a new card for each. In fact I tend to play this way when I run games at conventions, because it increases the chances of drawing Jokers. But, no, there are no thematic pairings to the cards between journey and location tables.

  3. On page 17, the rules forbid you from taking a bonus from a prompt if you have the choice, but for prompts that have you lose a resource you don’t have (or the arrival step), nothing happens, rules as written. For a more challenging game however, suffering a pentalty seems like a great idea!

what is required to get the deck of cards that go with the game?

Hi lorenmj, unfortunately we just ran out of stock for both the journal and playing cards! at this stage, we don’t have plans to get any more in, sorry!

Had the opportunity to take part in a five-player collaborative Cartograph session guided by Brandon at Briscon 2025 this weekend, and it was awesome. So much fun "Yes and"-ing each other's suggestions resulting in a magical world that none of us would have come up with on our own. It will be a while before I can stomach the idea of eating cheese again, mind you...

Glad you enjoyed it! Ya’ll were a great group - I’ll be forever curious how the jellyfish people were driven underground in their own homeland

Hi! I'm a history & geography teacher from Brazil. I started a RPG Club in the school I work at and I'd really like to show my students this game! We've recently played Artefact by Jack Harrison and this would be a great follow. Unfortunately, being a public school teacher and with the currency in Brazil as it is, we can't afford to buy the game. Would you have any idea of when any more community copies might be available? Thank you so much!

Hey maeyloue, that sounds like an awesome RPG club, I wish I had one of those when I was in school! I’ve just added 100 more community copies.

Happy map making!

Omg same here! Except I'm an English teacher in Hong Kong doing a Creative Writing program for my kids! Planning on doing the Artefact with my group soon as well. Did your kids have fun with Cartograph? Want to know if this should be the next one I introduce!

hi there. Just wondering if you ever add community copies. I run a ttrpg group for my middle school students and I think they’d like trying this.

Sure, I’ll add some now!

thank you very much!

I had an afternoon free and decided to play this on a lark after hearing it played on Friends at the Table - had a lovely time with it, filled a moleskine over a few hours, enjoyed myself immensely.

Thank you for the kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed it. If you ever wanted to share the map you made, we have a discord server with just the place: discord invite

I really love your game thank you! Is there any chance to wait for a low-ink printer friendly version? It will be really cool to print and play :)

(+1)

Hey cemuka, thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately I don’t have the capacity right now to make a printer friendly version, apologies

Would you happen to have tips for playing Cartograph online, Brandon and team?

(+2)

I have been trying to crack this particular problem for a few months now, as I really want to run some online games for our discord server! However, I’ve yet to find a good solution. Short of using Tabletop Simulator, which is a bit feature-heavy for Cartograph’s needs, I haven’t found any application that can handle both rolling dice onto a page and being able to draw on said page.

Apologies I couldn’t be of more help!

No need to apologize, yeah it's the rolling onto a paper that is hard to replicate in online gaming.

Thanks a lot for the reply, Brandon and team.

Great GM less map making game.

Thank you so much! Glad you like it

I really like it thanks Ravensridge Press team. The prompts are really great.

(+1)

Hi I'm someone who has the old version of cartograph, What is the difference/updates that makes this version better? or is it the exact same?

(+2)

Hi there,

The atlas edition of Cartograph is a revised ruleset with over 40 **extra ** pages of content. It has double the number of prompts, tables for naming locations, wares, coin, hunting, and all manner of other things. It also includes an expanded character creation, and rules for multiplayer, non-authoring mode, and peaceful mode. It also contains advice for hacking the game.

Hope that helps!

(+1)

that does help, thank you!

(+1)

What do you do when you are told to 'Mark and name a discovery'??  I take it you put a '?' on the map area but there is no naming table for discoveries.  So I am a little confused.

Hi! The rules for marking locations is mentioned on page 22 - but yes you are pretty much correct in that you put a ? on the map! As discoveries are all very different, it was impossible to make a name generator table for them, so you’ll just have to use your imagination to name the discovery!

Hope that helps!

(+1)

Thank you.

Hi,
I recently acquired a hardcopy of this at supanova.
Are the character sheets available somewhere to play as a pdf, or will I have to purchase this pack to get them?
Cheers

Hey there! Thanks for the support! I can supply you with all the digital files - the next printing of Cartograph will have a QR code that will take you to free downloads, but alas it was not something I considered for this printing. Could you send me an email at theravensridgeemporium@gmail.com and I’ll send you the files!

Email sent, thank you

How many pages is the book? Is it better to print it as a hard cover or soft cover?

The book is ~90 pages, and the phyiscal copy is hardcover. Hope this helps!

(-1)

Where I can buy the hardcover?

You can purchase it from our website here: theRavensridgeEmporium

Thanks for checking out the game!

(1 edit)

On page 7, is it meant that either 'Fame' in the text or 'Notoriety' in the table be the same thing? If so, which word was intended?

Hey Lorenmj,

The use of “fame” in the value and disposition section is there to show you that you can come up with your own (a descriptor that isn’t on the table). Certianly fame and notoriety are similar (although I’d argue there are slight differences between the two descriptors) it is ultimately up to you the player to determine how you interpret the descriptors. Hope that answers your question!

Absolutely love using this to build out regions of my fantasy world! 100% Recommend for fledgling map makers

(+1)

Hey thanks so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying Cartograph! 🧭

I am super hyped about playing it after seeing some reviews! I'd like to pre-order the physical edition; does it give access to the pdf, to start playing before August?

(+1)

Hey thanks so much, I hope you enjoy the game! Yes the pre-order should come with the digital files too 😊

Thank you! That's an insta buy for me then ^^
