How does this solo game compare to the mythic rules for solo detectiving?

(1 edit)

Great question! The key differences are:

  • Caught in the Rain (CitR) uses a standard deck of playing cards to act as not only a timer for the mystery but also the clues themselves compared to an accumulation of progress points and asking the system if you've done enough to solve the mystery in mythic.
  • CitR creates a framework of scenes specifically designed to lead to finding clues compared to Mythic's general scene system that is applied to its mystery rules.
  • CitR uses dice resolution rules with fail-forward mechanisms built into it to ensure that the mystery and the narrative keeps moving forward even if it becomes more dangerous for your investigator.

I love mythic and I still use it as my go-to GM emulator. Tanya is a big inspiration for my solo designs :) .

pretty cool game!! I see some videos in YT. Do you Have comunity copies? I can't affort it now :(

No problem! added some more

Caught in the Rain is one of the smartest solo mystery RPGs I’ve played in a long time. It tackles the biggest problem with solo mysteries: how do you not accidentally know the answer? By using a hidden truth deck and clue sets that build through the process of elimination. The mystery is literally solved from the start… You just don’t know how yet. It’s clean, elegant, and genuinely tense. The scene structure keeps investigations focused, while danger and threats escalate naturally. Noir detective? Fantasy wizard sleuth? Sci-fi ship captain solving a murder? The genre tables support all of it.  If you’ve struggled to make solo mysteries feel surprising, this one genuinely solves that problem. Full video:

Amazing mystery game with super cool mechanics!

I'd love to try this out, is there any chance of community copies being released?

Hey! Sorry for the late reply, yes we’re going to put some community copies up now!

(1 edit)

Thank you!  I will be sure to leave a review!

How do you ever roll above a 6 on the consequences table when its a 1d6 roll? Is there meant to be an add or is it meant to be 2d6?

Hey! On page 28 and 29, under consequences and under threats, you’ll note that when a threat acts and rolls a consequence, it always adds it’s level to the roll, meaning if a level 3 threat acts and rolls a 6 for example, you’d look at entry 9 on the consequence table. Hope that helps!

Thank you!

I noticed non-signature keywords are "struck" but not removed.  Do you ever clear them, or could your slots fill up with struck keywords if you replay the same character long enough?

Hey! There are no limit to the number of keywords you can get, but the game asks you to stike them rather than remove them as keeping tabs on what keywords you’ve used is helpful for framing the narrative, especially when you attempt to solve the mystery!

Is there any chance we could get the pdf in a printer friendly format?

We are working on this in the near future - stay tuned

The blacked out version I got had Fantasy and Horror type mystery tables. Do you have any tables for an Urban Fantasy type setting? Like, having the detective be a werewolf or vampire type deal?

There are tables for urban / noir, and tables for gothic horror, which you could use in tandem to have an urban fantasy mystery!

Reading through it now. Looks good!

I found a typo on page 24. #2 has ‘somewhere’ instead of ‘someone’.
